Learning To Paint

Those of you who read my homeschool blog, know that I am learning to paint, using the one stroke method. Since I really want to paint jewelry, I am going to share my progress here. The first paper is the teacher's, my mom. The second is mine. You can clearly see the difference, lol. She has been painting for quite some time, so I guess it really is not a good comparison. I have decided that I will practice for a little bit each night, that I can. The leaves are especially hard. I got a new brush called the Filbert brush, and I really love this brush. I would love to get good enough, where I can paint jewelry, candle holders, and whatever suits my fancy. Do you paint? What method do you use?

Colors of Garnet Gemstones

It is time to feature some birthstones, again. I try to do this each month, but with different info or videos. Since the birthstone for January is the Garnet, I have selected videos for each color. Garnet comes in every color and range of the rainbow, except blue. However a new find has Masasi blue color change garnet from blue to reddish purple. Like Alexandrite however it is not always a complete change and many are just color shifts. But if you love phenomenon gemstones, as I do, it is worth considering adding one to your collection. Making Upcycled Jewelry Earrings

Something that has peaked my interest, is making jewelry or other craft items, from recycled items. It is called upcycling and is a very new trend that is becoming very popular. I laugh at myself, because I really don't have a ton of time to learn more new things, but this is an awesome idea. I will share more upcycling videos in the coming weeks. Do you upcycle?

Merry Christmas Jewelry Style

Merry Day after Christmas to everyone. I had a wonderful Christmas and thought I would share some of the lovely pieces I got to complete for Christmas.

This first shown right here was a sapphire semi mount to hold a 9mm round stone. Well first off the shape of the ring was not round, but oval first complaint. Second complaint is the prongs were crappy. This is a four prong ring, two broke off immediately. I was very upset and was going to send it back, when I realized that I had my pink South Sea pearl that I left undrilled and it set in there so nicely. So I just folded over the two prongs, and voila a beautiful ring. At first I thought it was odd looking, but my son said it was unique. Odd and unique could be synonyms, but I love it. On a positive note the Sapphires in this semi mount are exceptionally bright and beautiful.

Next is my color change Garnet semi mount. I had tried to order this particular semi mount three other times, and it was out of stock in my size each time. The kids actually picked both of these settings with no urging from me, and I was so happy when it arrived. I can not get a good clear picture of it though, which stinks. I will try again outside in natural sunlight to see what I get. It has six color change Garnets, three on each side, with a 6mm round head for a gemstone. I placed a clear stone in the center, which actually has a slight tint of blue to it outside. The Garnets change from a lovely minty green color, to a champagne orange color sometimes even look pink. This is my first color change Garnet purchase, and it was something I would definitely buy again.

My mom also gave me two watch faces, so I can make beaded bands for them. I am very excited about that. Plus more floss to finish my counted cross stitch pieces.

Beautiful Opal Doublet Ring With Blue Sapphires

OK, I finally got some time to create some new pieces. This an Opal doublet or triplet, not sure which, set in sterling silver with blue sapphire accent stones on the shoulders. It is a size six ring. It will be listed in my Etsy store either today or tomorrow.

First I must tell you, what is a doublet or triplet opal? As you can see it is really beautiful, with awesome play of color. However, it is not a solid opal and does not hold the value that a solid opal with the same color would hold. Very often what happens is they get very thin slices of opal that are awesome, except for really being unusable. So someone came up with the idea to attach the slice of opal to another gem, usually quartz, on the bottom to give it substance. Then a layer of usually quartz or spinel is put over the top the make the stone durable to wear every day. Opal is very sensitive to chemicals and should not be worn every day unless it has the protective coating. It is also very soft and susceptible to chipping and breaking. So with this method of making a doublet or triplet, you get a lovely piece of Opal jewelry without having to waste the smaller useless pieces. They are not manmade they are Opals. Opal is the birthstone for October and is truly a special gemstone.

The Rarest Gemstone On Earth: Bixbite

If you hear Bixbite called red emerald, it is not an emerald, but a marketing strategy. Bixbite is a member of the Beryl family and is extremely rare and almost impossible to find in larger sizes and good clarity. It is a type 3 gemstone and normally very heavily included just as an emerald is. I would love to own a Bixbite.

History Of Mexican Fire Opal

Since the birthstone for October is Opal, I am sticking with that theme, for now. Did you know there was an orange Opal, or even red? It is rare fire Opal found in Mexico. It forms from volcanic lava. You can read more about Fire Opal by clicking the link. Fire Opal can also be found in Brazil but it is not nearly as beautiful as the Mexican variety. It has a milky cloudy look to it. The ring shown is most likely Fire Opal. But since I did not test it before I set it, I can't say for sure. It could also be Mandarin Garnet, or Carnelian either of which would be fabulous with that color. It does have some inclusions but does not take away from its beauty. One of my favorite pieces. I love orange, and orange gemstones are not easy to come by. Like all opals, fire opals are very fragile. With a hardness of around 6 it is best not to have an expensive Fire Opal ring, or bracelet. If you really wanted something pricey earrings or a pendant would be better. Opals are also sensitive to all kinds of chemicals so use caution when wearing and cleaning your opals.

Ethiopian Opal and Precious Opal

Opal is the birthstone for October. I love Opals, but of course nice Opals. Not all Opals are nice. Some have no play of color and appear milky white. I do not care for these opals. I own one very nice Opal but it is a triplet, which really is just a slice of really fine quality opal cemented to usually Spinel or Quartz. Australia and Ethiopia are the two places in the world that offer the finest quality Opals. Watch the videos below to see what I mean. I have never seen a faceted Opal as fine as the faceted Ethiopian Opal shown in the video. My oh my it is stunning!

My First International Sale In A Longtime

I had suspended all International sales from my Etsy store, for at least a couple of years now. My post office just could not seem to handle my questions with correct answers, and were constantly over charging me to ship international. Therefore I was always getting ripped off in shipping. Now I have learned the different types of shipping, and what exactly I need to satisfy Paypal and their policy for tracking packages. You do not need to send Registered Mail, as the post office will tell you, it will cost double. You do need to send Priority International Shipping and the fee varies depending on where you are shipping to. If you have a very expensive item then you might want Registered Mail for the added security, just remember it is at least 15 dollars to send Registered Mail plus the other fees for just sending it. I did send this one Registered and took the loss on the shipping because I so want it to go smoothly. If all goes well, I may loosen up on my International shipping.

My daughter Caitlin wanted to learn to sew. Since I can not sew, nor do I want to sew, my mother decided to help her. If any of you read my homeschool blog, you know we are going into our second year of 4H. We participate in county events, districts and some of the local fairs. Caitlin is only Clover Bud, so she is limited in what she can participate it. But, she can be in the fashion show. So my mom helped her make this cute horse pillowcase dress with lace and the red had kerchief. My mother also made the puppy bag Caitlin is holding for show. Caitlin didn't get to do too much, but she had fun learning what she did and would like to do more. I think we will look for a Cowgirl hat and boots, then put the kerchief around her neck. We had to do this early because my husband started firefighter classes and we are limited in car time to get to my moms to sew. I think it is adorable.

Halloween Counted Cross Stitch Table Runner

Isn't this the cutest thing ever? My mom finished sewing all my finished counted cross stitch pieces, and this is one of them. I will share the others too later. This is a young girl dressed as a witch pulling her pumpkin in her red wagon, with her black cat following. My mom sewed the finish piece onto Fall orange fabric and you can see the results. I can't believe it is the end of July and I haven't even shared any Ruby jewelry. Now when I bought this semimount it was sold to me as a red sapphire semimount. Red sapphires are rubies, but I think these red beauties are probably lab created though the seller denies that. If they are not lab created they are truly perfect and beautiful. I am going to assume they are lab created and will price it as such. The emerald however is real. I set it in the semimount myself. It is small but has fine color and clarity. It is sterling silver size 6, and will soon be available in my Etsy Store.

More Finished Counted Cross Stitch Pieces

We are quickly approaching July. Can you believe it? I can't and I wish it would slow down just a bit. This lovely ring is a Red Andesine/Labradorite gemstone ring. Ruby is the official birthstone for July babies. But this is a lovely red gemstone, and much more affordable than a fine quality, flawless ruby. It sits low to the hand for those who do not like their rings to catch on things. It is a size five, and would make a beautiful addition to any jewelry collection. Andesine/Labradorite is a fairly rare gemstone that is also found in yellow, green, and a color change/shift variety. It is usually heat treated to get the lovely red color. The other birthstone for June is Alexandrite. Because it is rare and very expensive in good quality, most people will use Pearl for the June birthstone. I personally love Alexandrite, it is one of my favorite gemstones. My children were born in May and July so my Alexandrite ring serves as my mother's ring. It is emerald by day and ruby by night. Finally Some Finished Cross Stitch Pieces

These are two of the cross stitch pieces that are finally finished. I had mentioned that I had done a whole bunch of cross stitch pieces many years ago, and never did anything with them. They have been stored away all these years. My mom volunteered to try to do something with them. Here are two of the finished products. The one with the two girls and teddy bear tea set, is many years old. It stayed together so well and is nice and clean. She backed it and framed it with lace and a large hoop. The little bear at the bottom is old but not as old as the top one. She found a cute little frame at a church bizarre, and added the blue lace to it. It is the sweetest little bear. Now I just need to figure out where to hang them.

Star Sapphire Phenomenon Gemstone

In my last post I told you about Black Star Diopside, a phenomenon gemstone with a four pointed star or asterism. This ring shown is a Blue Star Sapphire, and as I stated in the previous post, that is how you can tell a sapphire from diopside. Star sapphires have a six pointed star, as shown. This ring is already sold, but I wanted to be sure and show my readers the difference in the two. Both are unique and lovely.

Black Star Diopside Phenomenon Gemstones

You have probably heard of a Star Sapphire, but what about a Black Star Diopside? Black Star Dioside, also referred to as the Star of India is a natural untreated gemstone, that has a four pointed star on the gemstone. This is called a phenomenon gemstone. A Star Sapphire has a six pointed star, that is how you can be sure what you are purchasing. Plus a Star Sapphire has a simulated and synthetic version, where as Star Diopside does not. Star Diopside is very popular in India, but not so much here in the states. Even though it is totally natural it doesn't get the showtime of a Star Sapphire. I own several of these beauties, and will hope to be making jewelry with them soon. Check out the video to see exactly what a four pointed star looks like. As with all star phenomenon gemstones, the star is best see outside in natural sunlight. Indoor light makes it look washed out, and difficult to see.

How To Buy Gemstones

That is my whole collection of gemstones, minus the ones I have sold or set in jewelry. I have been collecting gemstones for about 8 years. I started because I just loved them, there are so many. Oh this doesn't include the cabachons I have either. As I started to really learn about gemstones, I really wanted to collect rare and exotic ones. The rarer the stone, the more expensive. Always by the largest and best quality stone you can afford. If that means you can afford a 4mm round Blue Diamond with good color and clarity, then that is what you should buy. Then work from there.

I mostly buy in large parcels, then have to try to figure out what they are. You usually can pick out the unique or better quality stones from just general stones. A lot of parcels will contain Amethyst, Peridot, Garnet, Citrine and Blue Topaz. They are the most abundant and least expensive stones on the market, for the most part. These are great for starter collections and making jewelry. Most people know what they are, and would be willing to buy them. There are some from each of those families that are more expensive, and of course bigger carat sizes draw a bigger price tag. For example Tsavorite and Mandarin Garnet are more valuable than traditional red Garnet. Imperial Topaz is extremely rare and expensive. Natural Swiss Blue Topaz is very difficult to find, and Madeira Citrine is a natural form of Citrine that looks like red wine. These are all highly collectible gemstones from their traditional counterparts.

So what I am saying is, buy the large parcels, you will get some special stones, but for truly collectible stones search for the exact item you want. Know what a quality stone looks like, and sells for on the retail market. Then go hunting for a deal. They are out there you just have to look and be patient. It took me three years to find an Alexandrite that not only could I afford, but had good quality. I love Alexandrite, and all color change gemstones.

I buy loose gemstones from JTV, Rio Grande, Fire Mountain Gems, and Ebay. I find Ebay you can get a good deal by buying overseas. The shipping is higher but they sell their gems for a fraction of what they do here. Just be sure to read their feedback and ask all questions before you buy. An honest seller will answer all questions. I have looked at other websites, but I find their prices to be exceptionally high. Like most people, I love a good deal. Read, read, read all the information you can before you begin. Educate yourself and be knowledgeable.

Know what flaws a gemstone may have and how it can affect the price. Because I love the more rare gemstones, I don't mind a flaw here or there. Also ask about treatments done to the gemstone. All sellers should know this info, it is required to be disclosed by law. If they don't know and the gemstone is really really high priced, I wouldn't buy it. If the price is decent I might take a chance. Resellers might not know, especially when they buy large parcels like me. If you don't have a way to test for treatments, you won't know. Most gemstones are treated, I think something like 95% of them. Be cautious of words like all natural. This usually means the gemstone has no treatments to it what so ever, but this is not usually the case. Sometimes all natural is used to mean it is a real gemstone not a fake or faux. So ask questions, always.

I think the last and most important thing is, don't buy if they don't offer a money back guarantee, unless of course it is the best price you have ever seen and just can't bare to not have it. If they aren't willing to take it back, that is usually a red flag at least for me.

Please note I am not an expert, just an enthusiast and learner of gemstone identification. Always know your facts before you make a purchase from anyone.

Alex Toys Super Embroidery Kit

Rare Amblygonite Gemstone

I actually have some light yellow colored stones that I wonder if they could be Amblygonite. I wish, but probably not. The ones shown in the video are super stunning with hints of blue and green. Have you ever participated in a BNR? Me neither, LOL! But tomorrow will be my first. I am giving you all a heads up in case you wish to participate. I will post the link to the BNR at 8 AM tomorrow, when it begins. It is being hosted by Team FEST, of which I am a proud member.

This is how it works. 16 shops begin the BNR, I will be one, and am offering 50% off all my items, others will have other sales that should be listed in the comments. If you see something you would like to purchase, in the comment section you request permission to purchase from shop, so and so. The curator will then give you permission to do so. After you have purchased you come back with the transaction ID. Then your shop replaces the shop in the treasury for others to hopefully buy from you. It is my understanding that this is a great way to increase sales. Once your shop has had an item bought from it, and you want to get back in, you need to make a purchase. The minimum purchase is 5 dollars, and you can buy any item in that persons shop not just the treasury item. You do have to have a Etsy shop to obviously get in the BNR, however your regular shoppers can still purchase from your store if they choose to. So keep your eyes open for the Team FEST BNR, begins at 8 AM tomorrow, until 8 PM. Easter is coming, you will get some great deals.

Ammonite and Ammolite

I am fascinated with Ammolite, which actually is a trade name for the company that took prehistoric Ammonite fossils, and made them into gemstones they named Ammolite. If you are a collector of gemstones that are truly natural, or organic this gemstone is for you. I do not own any, but I will sometime in the near future. Watch the video it is an amazing creation made by Mother Nature.

Tanzanite and White Topaz Band Ring

This style of ring has been a popular one for my shop. I have sold three with pink tourmaline, and white topaz. This is the only one I have that is Tanzanite and White Topaz. Each stone measures 3mm round, for a total carat weight of 30 points, or 1/3 of a carat. It is a size 6 sterling silver. This would make an awesome wedding band for those who like the non traditional look. It would also make a wonderful bridesmaid, graduation, first communion, or sweet 16 gift, or a pinky ring if so desired. The price is right, and it is petite, sweet, and just lovely. Very comfortable to wear. I wear this same ring as my wedding band, with a pink sapphire and blue diamonds. I wear it every single day, with no problems. This ring can be purchased in my Etsy store.
